Management provides a solid foundation for facing the challenges of a rapidly changing and highly competitive business environment. This course introduces the fundamental management functions of planning, decision-making, organizing, leading, and controlling, as well as the tools and techniques of managing people, processes, projects, and the work environment. Students explore current issues in management and gain insights into how successful organizations operate.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to;
  1. Demonstrating knowledge and understanding of business terminology, concepts, principles and theories.
  2. Making business decisions by identifying the issue(s), selecting and interpreting data, applying appropriate tools and techniques, and recommending suitable solutions.
  3. Evaluating business strategies and/or practices showing evidence of critical thinking.
  4. Understanding the dynamics and evaluate the effectiveness of different organizational structures.
  5. Applying skills and knowledge gained on change and change management.

Course Content

Evaluate your knowledge regarding the business management literature and answer the question: What is management? Debate why management must be understood within the context of organizations. Explain managerial paradoxes.Question the basics of the changing world of business.
Develop an answer to the question: What is a manager? Discuss why there is a need for managers. Explain the four traditional components of the overall management process. Identify three skills important for managers. Describe Mintzberg’s theory on managerial roles.
Review the origins of the management ideas and practice throughout history. Distinguish and criticize various schools of management thought. Evaluate the different perspectives of the key contributors of the management theory. Explain the basic ideas underlining the different managerial approaches.
Explain why decision making is an important component of good management.Distinguish between programmed and nonprogrammed decisions. Describe the rational, bounded rational and retrospective decision making models.
Recognize mechanisms you can resort to for developing an effective team.Question about some group concepts. Gain knowledge about group decision making process and advantages and disadvantages of it.
Explain how planning process proceeds.Define important factors should be considered in setting objectives. Evaluate different techniques you can use in planning. Analyze the distinct steps of controlling process. Understand various aspects of organization subject to control. Evaluate techniques used in controlling process.
Examine strategy formulation and implementation.Analyze how strategic management applies in different organizational levels.Evaluate different techniques used in strategic management.
Gain insight about learning organizations following Peter Senge's seminal book "The Fifth Discipline".
Distinguish different types of organizational structures.Analyze and evaluate basic elements of organizational structure.

Evaluate the difference between managers and leaders.Examine different leadership styles and contingencies affecting their fit to the situation.
